And here is my updated first project, the narrated slideshow. I added music to the background and put additional images in, so the same ones were not showing for extended periods. It was nice having class with all of you this semester!

Hey, all.

So again, the request here is simpler than the product.

We are proposing a 1 and a half-minute video clip. Do not make it 1 minute/less long or two minutes/more long. Your video should follow the storytelling and branding rules we’ve discussed.

Make lighting, audio, and image the highest quality. Remove popping, dark images, or stretched images. No clip art style images. Try to make all work your own. You should have proper credits included, if you use any unoriginal imagery.

The point of the video: that the viewer walks away knowing your person, place, thing, or idea, e.g. your subject, in detail. Your video should answer the question “can you please explain what you mean by (subject)?” Consider how our video examples did this.

Dear Sophie clearly explains the ways in which one uses Google products to enhance a father’s relationship with his young daughter. It uses quick changing screencasts to do this.

It gets better clearly explains the idea that as time goes on, we seek out and find those who accept us for who we are because of what we do, and not forever doomed because of prejudices. It uses quick changing interviews to do this. If you were to condense this into a 1:30 minute clip, what might you do?

Sh*t (stereotypes) say (above) shows various examples of what makes a stereotype. It uses quick changing skits to do this.

We want to see a rough draft this coming week. You can call me if you need anything at all.

If you’re still having trouble with your person, place, thing, or idea, consider exemplifying a leadership theory principle, why you love your favorite person (show, don’t tell), or what makes your favorite space in the world your favorite. I’m not saying to do this, but a Sh*t Digital Media Communication Profs Say would not get a bad grade, probably.

John LeMasney

Transliteracy is the notion to communicate across different platforms, tools and media providing the user the opportunity encode and decode what they are trying to communicate. As technology continues to merge to create new tools and products, it will be integrated and impact our lives differently. The second reading explored the technology tools that are emerging. Specifically, the use of emerging technology within higher education. These tools and technology will impact how educators conduct their course and engage with students. Some of the technology that was discussed included cloud computing, mobile apps, social reading, and learning analytics. The last reading was a letter from the CEO of Google. In his letter, he discussed the future of Googles products and their impacts on the lives of their uses.

With the changing landscape of technology and the changing nature of work, it is crucial for leaders to understand current trends and critically analyze what new technological tools will best help them manage their workforce and accomplish the goals and mission of their organization. The Horizon Report highlighted emerging technologies and the possible impacts on higher education. This article was especially interesting for my current line of work within higher education. This article provided new insight of technologies to research and begin to develop ways to incorporate them. It is important to review reports of this nature to discover what may be on its way.

Here is a video urging libraries on universities to consider transliteracy as they develop programs:

The area that I struggled the most was with the first article and the concept of transliteracy. While I feel that I understand the basic concept, I had a hard time deciphering what the author was trying to communicate. On some level, I felt that he was arguing that it wasn’t appropriate work for the concept.

1) If you could develop a new technology/tool what would it be?

2) What is a current technology/tool that has change the way you work?

These articles impact my future assignment by highlighting the possibilities of technology and what is to come. I am not sure what the next assignment will be, but it may be fun to explore an emerging technology and its usefulness within my work.

Brad Czerniak defines transliteracy as, “the ability to encode and decode information between or across languages.” His blog article discusses the many definitions he and others have thrown around . The Horizon Project examined digital media that could be utilized for academia and the many possibilities, such as cloud computing and specific applications. Google CEO Larry Page spoke on the wonders of the search engine and its ability to link people to information they seek instantly, saying, “ People shouldn’t have to navigate Google to get stuff done. It should just happen.”

The ability to integrate technology into an academic setting is something that has really prevailed in the past ten years. More and more individuals are obtaining degrees from online colleges such as the University of Phoenix and Rider even offers an array of online courses. The Horizon project goes into the possibilities technology has to improve our education system tremendously.

The part of Google CEO Larry Page’s letter that stuck the most to me was his quote,”We’ve let a thousand flowers bloom; now we want to put together a coherent bouquet.” Google’s innovation has allowed users to access information and connect with others in ways that are almost unthinkable. They have provided us with the tools and we now have the ability to do what we wish with this power.

Understanding how to integrate technology into any profession, whether it is education or finance or marketing is extremely important for many reasons and can be a giant asset for myself. As we have already learned in our course, having a firm understanding of digital technology is a tremendous weapon for any leader to have in their arsenal. Me personally, knowing how to utilize the technologies in a professional setting gives me a tremendous advantage and upper hand over others. It allows me to think more creatively and explore possibilities less versed professionals are able to.

I did have a difficult time understanding the first article, specifically what the authors final takeaways were. The fact that he provided multiple definitions and counterpoints left me puzzled.

1. How can Rider integrate technology more effectively into their curriculum.

2. Is google+ a social network which could rival Facebook and Twitter in size and growth?

3. What were your main takeaways from Czerniak’s article?

Brad Czerniak – On Transliteracy

Brad gave an overview of his opinion and common interest and definition of what he expressed his thought of the definition of Transliteracy. As the argument involved him Sue Thomas and her research group Brad formed his own opinion and blogged about it. Throughout the article Brad is expressing his take on the word Transliteracy and providing readers with an explanation of his theory and thinking.
2-3 three key ides in the reading that related to media, convergence, and leadership. Brad displayed leadership by taking the intuitive to explain and express his feelings and thoughts about something he felt strongly about. He related his thought into theories as he broke down definitions and terms and explaining them to the public. Brad exclaimed transliteration as translitercy is defined by stating “the prefix trans – added to the word literacy has a strong denotation–literacy – the ability to read and write, in a given language. He points out that language is a system of signs (icons, symbols) for encoding and decoding information, which very well can be related to media. He pointed out that the interface language can also be sing, symbols, analogies, literal, and physical attributes as they convey information.
I found it difficult and challenging to grasp the understanding and ask myself a question why the definition couldn’t and Brad’s understanding be on common ground as to what Sue felt. In her response back to Brad was debatable but it just appeared that she wanted to be right. However she did make common sense when discussing what Brad explained about visual language. We all have our opinion about how we see, explain and feel about things I guess this is why people blog to find out what others think.
Are there any real solid definitions for the terms?
Has other responded to his post other than what’s showing on the current article?
I can see how this article and its topics can be explored a little more. I personally would like to read what others thought about his blog. Also I would like to see if he had other articles and see what there topics are.

Google – Velocity, Execution and Focus

The overview of this article was so many things to me as a reader. The CEO, Larry Page, is giving his users, readers, innovators, and heads up if you will to the remarkable things he and his company is doing. Sharing and making users aware of what’s next in creations and what they are working on for the near future keeping users in mind. In this vast world of technology people are looking for the velocity of having things right at their finger tips, and CEO, Larry Page wants his users to standby they have more technology coming to give user just what they are “searching” for.

2-3 There keys things stated in this article that I found profound is that the CEO took the leadership in reorganizing the management team to improve responsibility and accountability across Google. Seeing things that needs to be improved, changed or reorganized to become better in a business that is this big change is inevitable because it’s servicing the basically the world of technology. As for media and convergence, they have closed or combined over 30 products, including projects like Knol and Sidewiki and giving Google Search as visual refresh, that’s now cleaner, more consistent, and a beautiful look. Companies tend to survive when they change, look for new creations and inventions. They have gone mobile by using the Android of technology.

A company like GOOGLE you have to be innovative and the best part about this is that they listen to their users. As GOOGLE continue to make unique and unexpected changes they introduce GOOGLE+. This is a new step into the technology sharing world. So when you sign up for this application if you will, you can use what’s called Circles to group people into different categories, such as people who have the same interest as you and you can share things like movies, videos, but just within your circles that you create. So image your own personal website search that only gives you what you’re looking for and now what others think you want.

What I found difficult to understand is this reading is HOW does this company keep up with the technology? Just reading all the amazing features, tools, and searching features, my head started to go in circles. For those who appreciate technology and live on the edge of what I would call a “microwave life” wanting things done faster than a “slow cooker” would definitely enjoy and love what GOOGLE is doing.

My questions are:

How the heck do they keep up with the forever changing world of technology?

How often do they make changes and updates to their software and their technology?

I can truly see this topic as something to explore but where does one start with even trying to figure this out.

1. In the first reading, Brad Czerniak defines transliteracy and discusses other elements within the topic, such as language, visual language, interface language, platforms and tools, and then offered a re-definition to transliteracy.

Next, the NMC Horizon Project Short List: 2012 Higher Education Edition discussed a variety of new digital media becoming available, the amount of time it would take to implement such technologies, and the relevance and use they could have (or are already having) in the academic setting, such as Cloud Computing, Mobile Apps, and Social Reading to name a few. It was interesting to read about these different technologies and how they can impact higher education.

The last reading, 2012 Update from the CEO of Google, Larry Page, was another interesting read and talked about how Google should be a simple experience that allows users to do what they want and need without unnecessary frustrations. Google’s concept has been to make their products work well together to best benefit the user, such as through sharing, which is the main idea behind Google+, which created a “social layer across all [their] products so users connect with the people who matter to them” (Larry Page).

2./3. In regards to the discussion of Google+ from CEO Larry Page, this program is allowing people to be leaders in the digital world by literally having followers, such as some users having already acquired over a million followers. In addition to the numerous people who have embraced Google+, there is a lot of depth to the information flowing between users and they are becoming very engaged in the process of sharing through this medium. Google+ is a leader as a new form of communication for people to engage in and it is allowing users to lead discussions and information sharing on a variety of topics as selected by the users. It also allows for convergence because of the variety of types of information that can be shared via this method. As the CEO mentioned, Google users can recommend search results and videos they enjoyed to other users for example. Users can also share their own ideas with people in their circles and beyond if they would like.

The main concept that I took from the Horizon Project Short List was that new technology will allow for new ways of learning, which is great because different people take in information in different ways (different learning styles). Perhaps the use of different technology can make learning an easier or less frustrating process for some students. Augments reality could allow students the opportunity to see what they are learning about from a teacher’s/professor’s lecture and the information they are reading in a book; plus, they could see it from all angles (3D). Game-based learning can help students learn through application because it provides for simulations and role-playing; students then have to figure out how to react in different situations and come up with creative problem solving. Gesture-based computing also allows for different types of learning and this would appeal to kinetic learners who learn best by doing. Many of these media mentioned can also contribute to teambuilding and group work within the classroom. The key trends mentioned made a lot of sense and I touched upon some of them in my above elaboration, such as collaborative learning, interactive learning, and studying/working in different time and space.

Challenges exist within current technology, such as not meeting the demand for personalized learning which I would say is very relevant to those with various learning and/or developmental disabilities. As discussed in the significant challenges section of the Horizon Project Short List, “one-size-fits all teaching methods are neither effective nor acceptable for today’s diverse students.” Development of new technology for education can “provide more learner choice and control and allow for differentiated instruction.” As we move forward, technology can benefit many students who could have potentially given up on an education in the past because the methods were not conducive to their circumstances.

Blank T-Shirt Image retrieved at: http://www.myclubmylife.com/clubtech/Pages/bkpkt_items/T-shirt%20Outline.jpg. Image created/edited with GIMP.

4./5. Can we talk about the technologies mentioned as needing 4-5 years for adoption within the Horizon Project Short List? I found myself not understanding those as well as the others, especially the Internet of Things.

It was mentioned that there are institutional barriers that are challenging change to moving forward with new technologies within education. And there are obviously some schools out there that are more innovative as far as moving forward with and experimenting with different technologies: Besides having the money to do so, what are these schools doing to break through these barriers of resistance to change/comfort with status quo?

I looked up some information here; I did not find much, but I found this blog about what others thought about the idea of resistance to change on the part of teachers: Resistance to Change and Teachers – “I just can’t learn technology because it’s too hard.”

I found this article called Columbia College Embraces Technology as well, which talks about some of the technology Columbia College has brought to their campus. They are not specifically in the classroom, but they involve academics and students’ interactions with the institution.

Something that I find difficult, which I kept thinking while reading the second two readings (despite also recognizing all of the positive effects) is simply the idea that too much technology will make our lives too easy and that could hurt us. What are the effects of this and how do we avoid technology hurting us by making us helpless without it?

Wall-E Clip – The Sad Future of Human Kind

6. From the NMC Horizon Project Short List: 2012 Higher Education Edition, I thought about the ways that some of these new technologies could enhance distance education and group learning within higher education. Mobile apps could allow students to share a variety of information with other students they may be working with and they can also be utilized for getting the information from their school that they need, such as schedules and grades or news in regards to academics, athletics, and events. Social reading could allow students working in a group to share parts of readings that they have done with each other that they found particularly interesting, share notes they have made, and have discussions virtually (which would be helpful with distance education courses especially, since they do not meet in an actually classroom). Something like this may have also been helpful in studying for the comprehensive exam, especially when members of our study group were not in the same place as the rest of the group. Instead, we skype studied during Spring Break, which was helpful for our study group member out of state for the break. Augmented reality sounds really neat as well. It mentioned 3D images and visiting historic sites at different periods of time or visualizing car repairs as a couple examples, so it would probably be interesting to use in biology classes (especially high school) instead of performing actual dissections (or at least that is the thought that came to my mind).

I enjoyed learning more about Google+ through the 2012 Update from the CEO and it made me think of ways it could be beneficial to me in my career, especially as my current colleagues and I move on from Rider to other institutions within various Student Affairs positions. I think utilizing Google+’s Circles to stay connected in a professional setting and then incorporating our future colleagues as well could serve a great purpose for professional development, brainstorming, and continued networking. We can share articles, websites, and videos we find interesting and helpful in our work to continue to help each other out and support one another just like we do in our positions currently, despite the distance that will inevitably be between us soon. (Graduating soon is bittersweet; it has been really starting to hit me that I will essentially be losing, as in proximity, people that have been such a big part of my life for the past two years, but I have learned that technology can be really beneficial here to help us stay connected and colleagues despite being at different institutions and potentially in very different areas of the country in just a few months.)

The next-generation search topic in the Google CEO update was also interesting to me as someone who plans to continue my education beyond graduate school at some point. Research can be somewhat difficult at times, but if Google were to better know me, my search results could become more useful to what I am actually looking for by cutting out information that is irrelevant.
